Authors Note

 

Growing up I would remember the conversations about the past. I would remember people having discussions about Rosa parks, Martin Luther,  and Malcolm X. I’d hear things like, “ He’s amazing for standing up for what he believed in.” Or something like, “ I admire how devoted she was to keeping her seat on that bus.”  Each time I hear these conversations I’d think what about now. Even though we’ve come so far to the point where everyone has equal rights no matter what color is their skin what about the people.  Nobodies perfect. In fact right now as your reading this there are people out there being treated as inferior beings because of their race. We can do something about that. After working so hard to get rid of this situation are we going to let it happen again. That’s why I wrote this book to give people an insight on what’s going on now.

Book: Eragon

Author: Christopher Paolini

 

How does this text make you think about justice in the world?

Reading this book made me think that there are many forms of justice. It’s just matter of knowing where to look.

The book eragon by knopf the main character of the book Eragon is  brought in to an abnormal life due to his dragon Saphira. As he learns the ways of a dragon rider he and his dragon saphira deliver countless measures of justice.

Garrow

In the beginning of the book before Eragon and Brom left on their journey Eragon vowed that he would avenge his Uncle Garrow and take the lifes of those that injured him. On page 82 it says, “ Saphira,” Eragon said. “ I will take these creatures and avenge my uncle. 

The village

As Eragon and his mentor Brom enter the center of the village Yazuac they saw mountain of dead people. They saw the lifeless bodies of men, women, and children. At the top of the lifless mountain was a baby; covered in blood. A crow that came in from the distance tried to consume the baby. Eragon readied his bow and shot the crow , leaving the baby at peace. On page 131 it says, “A crow dipped out of the sky, like a black shadow, and perched on the spear. It cocked its head and greedily scrutinized the infants corpse.  “Oh no you don’t,” snarled Eragon as he pulled back the bowstring and released it with a twang. With a puff of feathers the crow fell back wards.

The Urgals

            The Urgals which are war crazed creatures the ones responsible for the deaths of all the innocent men, women, and children returned to the village Yazuac. Knowing it was the right thing to do Eragon and Brom fought the Urgals to bring justice to the village. On page 133 it says “A deafening scream tore out of Eragon as he charged the Urgal head first.

               No one perfect but its up to us to do what’s right.

The main character Eragon from the story Eragon written by Alfred A. Knopf Is afraid of what may become if he and his dragon Saphira were discovered.

Stunned

For example from pages 68-69 when Eragon stood in Carvahall two strangers approached him. He was stunned. His body able to move…Unable to walk. Within the story it says,” He struggled against it and screamed to himself, move! His legs swayed, but to no avail. The strangers stalked toward him with a smooth noiseless gait.

Worried

As Eragon awakens from his slumber at horsts house a friend of his he gets worried. Worried of the soon to be questions and what may become of his dragon Saphira, Eragon leaves. Hoping To avoid the anger and hate from his loved ones. Within the story on page 94 it says, ”Saphira was right, thought Eragon. It’s time to leave. Too many questions from too many people. Sooner or later they’ll find the answers.”

Understanding

After reading this book I learned that there is justice everywhere. It’s up to us whether or not we want to peruse it or not. Also that we have the power to overcome our fears as long as we put our minds to it.

Questions

What’s out there? There’re many different types of people but is there good in them?

Connections

Connecting to reality is there really justice. There are many interpretations o of justice. But is it really there. Nobodies perfect. Reading this book made me think about how it’s up to us to decide whether or not we want to help those in need. To me that’s justice.

 

 

Should books be Banned

 

 

             Throughout the world there are people reading books that increase their vast

expanse of knowledge. These books can teach readers about the meaning of life,
and what it means to live but; as each day passes these wonderful books filled with
pages of liquid gold are being banned. Each book has a story and, that story has a
lesson.

 

            The Story Flight which is a Book on the verge of being banned teaches readers how to appreciate life and treat each obstacle as a chance to gain knowledge For example as the main character Zits inhabits the body of Gus he learns what it means to care for. Others. As Gus and his platoon of soldiers rode into the celebrating Indian camp all of his intention of determination to take revenge was lost. The bodies of the Indians played across the dirt covered land creating a pool of blood. With one Indian left Gus ran. He grabbed the Indian boy and ran with all his might. His only intention was to do whatever he could to protect the boy. To have courage and believe in your self is one of many human goals. If Gus wasn’t there what would become of the boy?

 

            What is the purpose of banning books? Is it to protect people? Because Each book has something to teach people. Each book contains information that can help readers in life. Within the book Divergent written by Veronica Roth the main character Tris’s goal is to protect those in need. Even if at the cost of her life her goal was to perform at the best of her ability supporting what she believed it. There’s a story out there for everyone. Each story is an open book containing many obstacles. but its up to us to overcome them.

 

            Even though there are some books contain material that are too intense for certain readers each book is an opportunity for readers to learn a lesson. There is knowledge in everything and it’s up to us whether or not we want it. The hunger games which is a book written by Suzanne Collins is on the prospect of being banned. Some people say there’s too much killing and some people say there’s too much suspense. But each book has a moral. Like how the moral of the book is to believe in yourself. As catnip reaches the main character Catniss reaches the end of her story all she thinks about is getting home. Throughout the games all she thinks about is home; to never give up.

 

            There are tons and tons of books out there. Each book better than the rest. Their purpose to teach readers about the benefits of life. Each book has a place in this world. And those books have someone to read them. What is the purpose of banning books? Everything is created for reason.

Nonfiction reading Response

According to the article “Does the Punishment fit the Crime,” Written by David Powel 

discusses the system of government occurring in Singapore and how much time is received for 

each crime committed. The time received for each punishment is questionable. The punishments 

themselves

Within the article the author talks about what happened to a man who robbed his 

apartment and how he went through a punishment of 10 years in prison. For example in the 

article it says, “ When I lived in Singapore , my apartment was robbed and the robber was 

sentenced to ten years in prison and 10 strokes with a cane.” For what reason is there to send a 

man to prison for 10 years over a simple robbery. The idea it self is unjust. Where is the justice in 

that? 

What is justice? Do people even know the definition of justice? Do we? Cause it seems

like nowadays anything goes. Can we follow up with justice? Its purpose? Justice a noun 

definition the quality of being just; fairness. The principle of moral rightness; decency. The 

governmental system in Singapore is not justice. It seems corrupted using its power to send fear 

within others. A tyrannical government. How can we stop it? What can we do? I hope that 

somewhere out there someone with enough power to change the unfairness of the government in 

Singapore takes notice of the situation.

With the unfair punishments happening in Singapore what other places is this occurring. 

How can we prevent it from happening?

Tris’s Wonderful World of Arctypes

Book: Divergent

 Author: Veronica Roth

Throughout the story Tris struggles With finding out who she is and what type of person she wants to become. To guide her Four, Christina, and Will stand by her side pointing her in the right direction.

Mentor

I believe the mentor of the book Divergent Is the character Four. Throughout the book he guides Tris helping her make decisions to the best of her abilities. For example in the beginning of the story When the initiates are being taught how to fight, Four tells Tris how she can use her size to her advantage. On pages 82-84 it says,” You don’t have any muscle,” he says, “which means you’re better off using your knees and elbows. You can put more power behind them.”

Mother Figure

I believe that Tori one of Tris’s many protectors is the mother figure of the story. When Tris learns that she’s divergent. Tori steps in and tells her to trust no one.  Another reason why I believe that Tori is the mother figure of story is when Tori tells Tris she experienced it second hand. How when the Dauntless discovered that her brother was divergent the next day he was never seen again. Within pg 258 it says, “My brother he and I transferred from Erudite, only his aptitude test was inconclusive. On the last day of simulations they found his body in the chasm.

Shape Shifter

                I believe the character Al is the shape shifter of the story. In the beginning of the book Al takes on the personality of nice. But when push came to shove he decided to throw Tris over the chasm. Another Example is when Tris survived the chasm situation due to the help of Four Al decides to jump and kill himself.

The Realities of Life

The main character Tris in the book experiences many emotions as a result of joining the faction Dauntless; she goes from feeling alone to feeling accepted.

In the beginning of the book Tris feels alone. She felt as though everyone was trying to exclude her. To keep her out. To make her feel as though the only one she can trust is herself. All because she was born in the faction known as Abnegation. Where every one treats one another with respect. Within the book on pages 105- 106 it says, “Peter stands behind me. Whistling as he fluffs his pillow. “It’s hard to believe I hate someone who everyone thinks is so kind.” As the days as a dauntless increases Tris learns who her friends and enemies are. The Initiates Peter, Molly, and Drew have made it clear to Tris that they’re no friends of hers for example, when Tris exists the girls bathroom after taking a shower Molly, Peter, and Drew block her path. As she stands there backed against the wall Peter grabs the towel rapped around her body and tries to tear it off. On pages 168-169 It says,” Oh, I don’t know,” says Drew. “ She could be hiding something under that towel. Why don’t we look and see?” Now. I duck under Peter’s arm and dart toward the door. Something pinches and pulls at my towel as I walk away and then yanks sharply.” As Tris runs to the door Molly, Drew , and peter laugh, leaving Tris humiliated.

As  the days increase Tris begins to feel accepted as as one of the Dauntless. On pages 221-224 as Tris spends time with the dauntless born initiates they begin to respect her for who she is. On page 224 it says,”Pretty sure we can’t call you stiff anymore,” Shauna says she nods. “Tris.” Finally as Tris begins to show her true self the Dauntless begin to respect her for who she is. They Call her by Tris. Her name not stiff which is a (disrespectful word that those born of Abnegation are called.) With her friends Al Christina and will by her side finally she feels at home.

 Overall Tris is finally beginning to feel at place with herself and her new life as a Dauntless. But  what exactly is Tris to everyone? Do they really se her as a friend? What will happen to her once everyone learns that she's divergent? Will they turn on her? Will her friends turn on her? If not will they stand buy her stronger than before?
